Are you
getting a Safe Facial?
by Monica Guza
|
|
The idea of a facial at a luxury spa conjures up images of total
relaxation as a esthetician‘s fingers play across your face. Exotic
lotions and potions are liberally applied, refreshing and reviving your
skin. But that facial is more than pampering; it is a treatment that
improves the appearance and health of your skin. The person in charge of
that treatment is a trained, licensed professional. That training is
crucial because skin care is not without risk. You do not want to put
your face in the wrong hands.

There have been
instances where a treatment has gone wrong. According to Associated
Skin Care Professionals (ASCP), the nation’s largest professional
skin care association, a bride-to-be suffered an allergic reaction
during a routine facial. Her face was so irritated and red she was
unable to wear makeup on her wedding day. There have been other
isolated cases of injury and allergic reactions. The most common:
burns from overly-aggressive chemical peels.
Here are some
guidelines that will assure you are receiving a safe facial:
-
First, when you
book your appointment make sure your technician is licensed in
your state. Ask about experience too, especially if you are
receiving a more advanced treatment like a chemical peel or
microdermabrasion.
-
When you arrive
in the treatment room, take a look around. Is the room clean and
tidy? Do the linens on the bed look freshly laundered?

- If this is your first facial appointment there should be a
client intake form to fill out. It will have medical and
lifestyle questions, even a list of medications you take. It is
in your best interest to be completely honest. Full disclosure
on the intake form assures the esthetician will be able to treat
your skin with confidence and prevent any possible side effects.
- A skilled esthetician will take time to do a full
consultation; asking about allergies, sensitivities and what
your skin issues are.
- An esthetician who follows proper sanitation procedures will
wash her hands before beginning the treatment.
- During your treatment take note of the products your
esthetician is using. Have they been decanted? Do they smell
fresh?
- If extraction is done, a well trained esthetician will
always wear disposable gloves and use disposable lancets. The
extraction process should not be overly painful and last no
longer than ten minutes.
- Your esthetician will go over any post-treatment care. It is
important to follow these instructions to achieve the best
possible outcome.
Most of all don’t be afraid to ask questions. It’s your skin; you
want to protect it and make it glow with health not hives.
